Blizzard has confirmed that it will offer full refunds to South Korean Diablo III players. The move comes following long-running connectivity issues, including crashes and slow connection speeds due to overloaded servers.
Last month, the South Korean Fair Trade Commission launched an investigation into the matter after a flood of complaints from users affected by connectivity issues. While Blizzard said at the time that it would not provide compensation to the gamers, South Korean consumer protection laws state that users must be granted a refund for any product that has a problem not caused by the customer.
In a new post on the Korean Diablo III site, Blizzard now says that players who are less than level 40 will be able to submit for a refund between June 25th and July 3rd. Those who are less than level 20 can also return the game up to 14 days after their purchase from this point forward. Players will also receive a free 30 day trial for Starcraft: Wings of Liberty.
Earlier this month, Blizzard added additional servers in Korea in an attempt to fix the connectivity issues. Nearly two-thirds of Diablo III traffic in Asia is in South Korea, and Blizzard misjudged user volume when allocating servers for the game.
Western gamers had their own widespread connectivity issues when the game first launched, infamously leading to a plethora of memes. More recently, Blizzard released patch 1.0.3, including bug fixes and big changes to Inferno difficulty.
